URGENT UPDATE: A suspected arsonist has been arrested following a dramatic apartment fire in Redwood City early Saturday morning. Firefighters rushed to the scene on the 1300 block of Marshall Street at 7:35 a.m., where evidence suggests the fire was intentionally set.
Authorities report that the suspect, 35-year-old Eliaser Hernandez-Valadez, returned to the crime scene later that evening. According to the Redwood City Police Department, investigators quickly identified him as the suspect after assessing the fire’s origins.
“Investigators from the police and fire department learned the fire may have been intentionally set and a suspect was identified,”
said police officials.
Thanks to the swift response from firefighters, all residents were safely evacuated, and no injuries were reported. However, the blaze severely damaged three apartment units, displacing three individuals. The American Red Cross is providing assistance to those affected.
Hernandez-Valadez has been charged with arson to an inhabited dwelling, reckless burning, and probation violation. He is currently being held at the San Mateo County Jail.
