Chaos Erupts in Navy Yard on Halloween Night; Multiple Arrests Made

UPDATE: Chaos erupted in Navy Yard last night as hundreds of juveniles gathered, leading to multiple arrests and an intensified law enforcement response. Around 8 p.m. on October 31, 2023, disturbances began near the Navy Yard Metro Station, where what started as a peaceful gathering quickly descended into disorder.

The situation escalated rapidly with fights breaking out and traffic snarled as attendees ignored police instructions to stay on sidewalks. In response, the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD), along with Metro Transit Police, U.S. Capitol Police, the National Guard, and a Federal Task Force, were deployed to restore order.

By 11 p.m., authorities had dispersed the crowd but maintained a strong presence throughout the night to prevent further incidents. Five individuals were arrested, including an 18-year-old from Maryland for carrying a prohibited weapon, as well as two 14-year-olds and a 15-year-old facing charges such as failure to obey, resisting arrest, public marijuana consumption, and affray. Additional arrests were made by Metro Transit Police.

During the chaos, one police sergeant sustained minor injuries and received treatment from DC Fire and EMS. Officials confirmed that other Halloween events across the city proceeded without issue, emphasizing the isolated nature of the disturbances in Navy Yard.

Chief of Police Pamela A. Smith stated that the MPD and partner agencies will enhance their presence in Navy Yard to prevent similar occurrences in the future. Streets near M Street Southeast are expected to face closures, and local residents should anticipate increased patrols in the area.

The MPD is calling on the public to assist with information about the disturbances by contacting them at 202-727-9099 or texting 50411. As investigations continue, residents and visitors are urged to remain vigilant in the area.
