Humane Society Launches New ‘Catio’ to Boost Cat Adoptions

UPDATE: The Humane Society of the North Bay (HSNB) has just unveiled an innovative outdoor “catio” space, enhancing the lives of adoptable cats and increasing their chances for new homes. This exciting development allows shelter cats to bask in fresh air and sunshine while remaining safe and secure.

The brand-new Ila Emerson Memorial Catio features wrap-around enclosed netting and multi-level platforms, providing cats with a stimulating environment to explore and relax. Donated cat trees, sensory toys, and cozy bedding create a welcoming atmosphere for the shelter’s feline residents. Not only does the catio improve the cats’ well-being, but it also allows potential adopters to view and interact with the cats in a comfortable setting.

“Having the space to come out and roam benefits everybody,” said Cat Staff member Kristina George. She emphasized that socialization in this safe environment is crucial for the cats’ development, stating,

“Happy social cats get adopted.”

The project, which took about seven weeks to complete, was made possible thanks to generous donations from local businesses, including Foster Lumber and Golden State Lumber. Designed by Marin-based catio specialist Roger Sierra, the new structure replaces a cramped indoor area that previously housed around 60 cats, leading to stress and social issues. Shelter Director Carol Stillson noted that the cats were often confined, which could hinder their emotional health.

Now, the catio offers cozy nooks and shaded perches, giving adoptable kitties a chance to enjoy what the shelter describes as “a taste of nature.” Scheduled meet-and-greets in this new space allow potential adopters to bond with the cats, fostering relationships that could lead to successful adoptions.

Starting November 1, HSNB will also launch its annual adoption special, offering reduced rates for black and tuxedo cats. The shelter aims to combat the negative stigma surrounding black cats during this time of year, as Joseph Hayden, HSNB Board President, explained that they are often unfairly linked to superstitions. To ensure the safety of these cats, adoptions will pause through late October but will resume with discounts: $50 off for kitten adoptions and $25 off for cats over six months. Additionally, adopting a pair of cats nets a $50 discount, with $25 off each.

The Humane Society prides itself on low return rates and thorough screening processes for potential adopters. “We do our homework,” Hayden noted, adding that they implement strict guidelines to ensure the best interests of the animals are met.

This new catio marks a significant step forward in the shelter’s mission to find loving homes for its feline residents, creating a more engaging and enriching environment for both the cats and their future families.
