UPDATE: In a thrilling display of talent, sophomore Edward Liao from Yale has advanced to the semifinals of the Ivy League Qualifier Tournament, showcasing his skills against top collegiate players. The tournament, held at the Hecht Tennis Center at the University of Pennsylvania, featured intense matches against formidable opponents, including Princeton and Dartmouth.

The Bulldogs faced stiff competition this weekend, with Liao leading the charge for Yale. On the first day, the team struggled, with Jim Ji, Krish Gupta, and Troy Kudrjavtsev falling short in closely contested singles matches. Despite the challenges, Liao secured a decisive victory against Brown, winning in straight sets with a score of 6-3, 6-3.

“I thought I performed well. After having a rough weekend at Regionals, I was glad I was able to bounce back,” Liao stated. His performance propelled him into the round of 16, where he continued to shine.

The second day brought more promising results for the Bulldogs. In doubles, the pairings of Gupta and Ji triumphed over Dartmouth with an impressive score of 8-4. However, the singles matches proved challenging, with Gupta and Ji pushing their opponents to the brink in three-set battles. Liao maintained his momentum, defeating a player from Princeton in three sets 6-7, 6-1, 6-2, earning his spot in the semifinals.

On the final day, Liao began with an impressive match against Penn, winning decisively 6-2, 6-4. He then faced off against the No. 1 ranked player in collegiate tennis, Michael Zheng from Columbia. In a hard-fought match, Liao showcased his skills but ultimately fell to Zheng, ending his tournament run with a score of 6-2, 6-3.

“My biggest takeaway from my performance is that I have the level and the skill to hang with the best players in the Ivy League,” Liao remarked, highlighting his growth and determination.

The Bulldogs will regroup and prepare for the Georgia Tech Invitational, set to begin on Friday. With Liao’s impressive showing this weekend, Yale tennis fans are eager to see how he continues to develop in upcoming competitions.
