UPDATE: Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) officially closes Terminal 5 today, marking the beginning of a major demolition project aimed at revitalizing the airport for the upcoming 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games. This urgent renovation comes as part of a broader $30 billion Capital Improvement Program designed to enhance travel experiences and accommodate millions of visitors expected in the coming years.
As of today, American Airlines will shift its operations to Terminal 4, following the earlier relocations of JetBlue to Terminal 1 and Spirit Airlines to Terminal 2. With these moves, Terminal 5 will be completely closed, paving the way for demolition and reconstruction efforts.
Doug Webster, Chief Airport Operations and Maintenance Officer for Los Angeles World Airports, stated, “As we take this important step toward transforming LAX, the closure of Terminal 5 marks a pivotal moment in our journey to deliver a world-class airport experience.” He emphasized that airport officials are committed to minimizing disruption and ensuring smooth travel for all passengers.
In tandem with the operational shifts, LAX recently opened the new Midfield Satellite Concourse South, adding over 150,000 square feet and eight additional gates to the Tom Bradley International Terminal. This facility expansion is part of a larger vision to modernize LAX and improve traveler convenience.
The urgency behind these renovations is heightened by significant upcoming events, including the 2026 World Cup and 2027 Super Bowl. City and airport officials are preparing for an influx of travelers that will put LAX in the international spotlight.
Moreover, LAWA has unveiled plans for a new branding campaign that will transform the aesthetics of LAX. Over the next three years, travelers can expect terminals that reflect Los Angeles‘ rich culture, history, and sports heritage, alongside enhanced retail and dining options.
As demolition of Terminal 5 begins, LAX is poised for a transformative era that aims to redefine air travel in Los Angeles. The airport’s upgrades will not only improve operational efficiency but also enhance the traveler experience, ensuring that LAX stands out as a premier gateway to the city.
Stay tuned for further developments as this project unfolds and reshapes one of the busiest airports in the world.
