Mookie Betts Honored with Roberto Clemente Award for Philanthropy

Los Angeles Dodgers shortstop Mookie Betts has been awarded the prestigious Roberto Clemente Award for his significant humanitarian efforts. The presentation will take place before Game 3 of the World Series at Dodger Stadium on October 30, 2023. This accolade recognizes a Major League player for their exemplary character, community involvement, philanthropy, and positive contributions both on and off the field.

Betts was nominated by the Dodgers for this annual honor, which underscores the importance of social responsibility within the sport. The former American League MVP and eight-time All-Star established the 5050 Foundation in 2021 to support underserved youth. The foundation focuses on mental and emotional health, nutrition, financial literacy, and physical fitness, aiming to create a lasting impact in the community.

His charitable contributions have been substantial. In January 2023, Betts donated over $30,000 in Nike apparel to victims of the devastating wildfires in Los Angeles. Additionally, he provided financial assistance and recovery resources to a family whose home in Altadena was destroyed by the Eaton Fire.

Betts has also made strides in sports development, founding an AAU basketball program and an eponymous baseball tournament in his hometown of Nashville, Tennessee. He has contributed $160,000 to initiatives combating hunger and homelessness, further expanding his philanthropic reach. Notably, his efforts include establishing sports programs and supporting pediatric patients at UCLA Children’s Hospital.

Recognition of Betts’ dedication to community service aligns with the legacy of the award’s namesake, Roberto Clemente, who was celebrated for his humanitarian work before his passing in 1972. Betts joins an esteemed group of players who have received this honor, including his teammate Clayton Kershaw, who was recognized in 2012, and former teammate Justin Turner, who won in 2022 during his last season with the Dodgers.

As the Dodgers prepare for the World Series, Betts’ recognition serves not only as a testament to his on-field achievements but also highlights the profound impact athletes can have beyond the game. His commitment to philanthropy exemplifies the spirit of the Roberto Clemente Award and reinforces the importance of giving back to the community through sports.
