Gas Prices Shift in Mid-Hudson Valley; New York Average Falls

URGENT UPDATE: Gasoline prices across the Mid-Hudson Valley are experiencing a mixed bag this week, with significant fluctuations reported by GasBuddy. As of last week, the average price of a gallon of gas in Ulster County edged up slightly to $3.036, marking a minimal increase of 0.2 cents but still 7.1 cents lower than a month ago.

In Dutchess County, prices fell by 2.2 cents to $3.114, reflecting a decrease of 11.7 cents compared to the previous month. Meanwhile, Greene County saw prices remain nearly unchanged, with a slight increase of 0.5 cents to $3.077, down 5 cents from last month. Columbia County experienced a rise of 2 cents, bringing prices to $3.069, which is 13.6 cents lower than a month ago.

Overall, the average gasoline price in New York State fell by 3 cents to $3.07. This is 10.8 cents higher than a month ago and 8.4 cents lower than the same time last year, according to data from GasBuddy. Nationally, the average gas price increased by 2.5 cents to just above $3, but it remains 10.8 cents lower than a month ago and 7.4 cents lower than last year.

Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy, noted the recent price surges in parts of the Midwest due to a refinery fire that significantly impacted wholesale gasoline prices. He stated, “While the spike in prices in affected areas was significant, relief is likely in the weeks ahead as the situation stabilizes.”

Looking ahead, De Haan warns of the potential impact that a U.S.-China trade deal could have on oil prices, suggesting it may keep prices above the $3-per-gallon mark temporarily. He anticipates that prices may dip back below this threshold before the Thanksgiving holiday.

For consumers in the Mid-Hudson Valley, these shifts in gas prices could affect travel plans as the holiday season approaches. It underscores the ongoing volatility in fuel prices that can impact budgets for families and individuals alike.
