Warner Bros. Discovery has transferred nearly 800 classic Looney Tunes shorts to the free streaming service Tubi, a move that many initially viewed with skepticism. In August 2023, approximately 200 of these shorts were withheld due to “cultural sensitivities.” Despite concerns about the decision, it appears to have opened a new chapter for the beloved cartoon franchise.
According to a report from Vulture, Tubi’s acquisition head, Samuel Harowitz, expressed enthusiasm regarding the platform’s new offering. He stated that the Looney Tunes are “a huge win for us,” highlighting their popularity across different generations and demographics. The series has quickly climbed to the Top 10 of Tubi’s best-performing shows, reflecting a growing audience for classic animation.
The appeal of older animated series is evident, as Tubi also hosts other iconic titles like Tom & Jerry, The Flintstones, and the 1996 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles series. Harowitz noted that classic cartoons represent “one of the biggest fandoms we serve on the platform.” This trend suggests a robust market for nostalgic content, as audiences seek familiar favorites.
Tubi is currently engaged in “active negotiations” with Warner Bros. Discovery to secure the rights to keep the Looney Tunes available for an extended period, likely spanning several years. The platform is also considering the possibility of licensing new Looney Tunes content, including the upcoming film Coyote vs. Acme, although discussions are in the early stages.
In terms of viewing experience, Tubi’s arrangement presents the episodes in a non-chronological order, with advertisements appearing only between the shorts. While this may disappoint some viewers, the quality of the animations has received praise. Animation historian Jerry Beck played a significant role in restoring the cartoons, ensuring they look “day-one brand new.” Beck expressed satisfaction with Tubi’s treatment of the Looney Tunes, stating, “I’m kind of glad [WBD] took them off HBO Max and allowed other networks to use them so we can all see them.”
This shift in distribution not only breathes new life into the Looney Tunes but also underscores the evolving landscape of streaming services and their role in preserving classic content. As Tubi continues to build its library, the enduring legacy of the Looney Tunes remains a focal point, delighting both long-time fans and new viewers alike.
