Alden Vincent Munson Jr., a long-time resident of Manhattan Beach, passed away on August 29, 2025, following complications from heart surgery. He was 83 years old. Alden was born on April 9, 1942, in Kingsburg, California, into a family with deep roots in the region, where his mother and grandfather had also been born.

The Munson family later relocated to Springville, California, near their family sawmill, where Alden spent much of his childhood exploring the mountains surrounding Camp Nelson. His family operated a logging and development business, instilling in him a strong work ethic and appreciation for the outdoors. Eventually, they moved to Visalia, where Alden attended Mount Whitney High School, excelling in both football and music as a trombone player.

Career Highlights and Accomplishments

Alden pursued higher education, earning a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from San Jose State College, where he met his future wife, Jane Stewart. He furthered his studies with an M.S. in Mechanical Engineering from UC Berkeley and completed advanced studies in computer science at UCLA. He also participated in executive programs at prestigious institutions including Harvard and Stanford.

His professional career began at The Aerospace Corporation in 1966. In 1973, he joined TRW, where he quickly distinguished himself by leading significant programs. He eventually became Vice President of TRW’s System Development Division. After retiring in 1997, Alden took on senior leadership roles at Litton Industries.

Alden’s contributions to the field of intelligence were profound. In 2000, he received recognition as a Pioneer of National Reconnaissance from the National Reconnaissance Office (NRO) for his innovative work in developing a fully automatic electronic intelligence system. From 2007 to 2010, he served as Deputy Director for Acquisitions at the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, earning the National Intelligence Distinguished Service Medal in 2009.

A Passionate Life Filled with Adventure

Alden was known for his dynamic personality and passion for life. Whether in his career or personal interests, he was wholly committed and unafraid to voice his opinions. His distinctive dry sense of humor endeared him to many, making him a notable presence wherever he went.

He cherished spending time with family and friends, particularly enjoying water-skiing on the Stockton Delta and camping at Tower Park. A lover of snow skiing, he had already planned a heli-ski trip for the upcoming winter. Alden found joy in sharing the slopes with his grandsons and was an active member of the Los Angeles Model Railroad Society, demonstrating his love for model trains.

Traveling was another passion, with New York City ranking among his favorite destinations. Alden and Jane enjoyed exploring the city and attending musical theatre performances on and off Broadway, creating lasting memories with family and friends.

Alden is survived by his wife of 52 years, Jane; his daughter, Kathryn (Katie) Bechtel (Greg); and his two grandsons, Max and Sam Bechtel. He also leaves behind his sister, Marguerite (Pegi) Hover (Dick), and brother, Charles Munson, both of Visalia, along with numerous cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Kathryn Munson.

A Celebration of Life is scheduled for November 7th at 12:00 p.m. at the Manhattan Beach Community Church, located at 303 S. Peck Ave. A reception will follow the service, allowing family and friends to honor Alden’s remarkable life and legacy.
