BREAKING: The Springfield Township Fire Department is grappling with a devastating loss following the death of Lt. Jonathan Miner, who succumbed to injuries sustained during a tragic incident at his home. The incident, which involved an explosion, occurred around 10:30 a.m. on Sunday, October 29, 2023, while the dedicated 50-year-old was working on a project in his driveway.

Fire Chief Matthew Covey confirmed the heartbreaking news, stating, “There was a traumatic incident at his house. He was working on a personal project, and that’s what he succumbed to… those injuries.” Miner’s death marks a significant loss for the community, as he was set to celebrate 30 years of service to the department this November.

Colleagues and friends are mourning Miner’s passing, calling it an unimaginable tragedy. Capt. Randy Harless, who referred to Miner as his best friend, expressed deep sorrow, noting, “It was probably one of the toughest things in my career that I’ve had to deal with.” Harless and Miner inspired each other’s children to pursue careers in firefighting.

Assistant Chief Matt Strickland shared his memories of starting on the same day as Miner in October 1997. “Me and John shared an adrenaline issue. We both live for adrenaline, we were both jokesters. It was kind of a match made right away,” Strickland shared.

Known for his community spirit, Miner earned the nickname “Johnny on the Spot” for his readiness to assist neighbors. Covey highlighted Miner’s charitable efforts, saying, “They had a food cart out in front of their house for people to stop and get free canned goods, free food.” Together with his wife, Miner provided support to the community during the pandemic, offering free meals and fostering over 40 children throughout the years.

Miner is survived by his wife, three biological children, and four adopted children. Those who knew him describe him as having a great heart and a profound dedication to his community. Harless reflected on a pact made among colleagues to care for each other’s families, saying, “That’s been all of our focus.”

The investigation into the incident is being conducted by the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office. In light of this tragic loss, the fire department has established a GoFundMe to provide support for Miner’s family during this difficult time.

As the Springfield Township community comes together to honor Lt. Jonathan Miner, they are reminded of his unwavering commitment to service and the impact he made in the lives of those around him. This story is still developing, and updates will follow as more information becomes available.
