Mesa Launches Urgent Opioid Prevention Campaign for Youth

UPDATE: The City of Mesa has just launched an urgent educational campaign aimed at combating the youth opioid crisis. Partnering with The Be Kind People Project, this initiative, titled “Be Aware. Be Strong. Be HealthyTM Mesa,” targets students, parents, and educators within Mesa Public Schools and local institutions.
The campaign is financially supported by Mesa’s share of $4.7 million from national opioid settlement funds, emphasizing the city’s commitment to building resilience among youth against drug temptations. Mesa Mayor Mark Freeman stated, “This is a one-of-a-kind effort that invests in prevention by reaching children where they are.” He added that by fostering confidence and resilience early, the community can secure a healthier future.
According to Marcia Meyer, Founder and CEO of The Be Kind People Project, “The opioid epidemic continues to devastate families and communities throughout Arizona.” She emphasized the need for bold collaborations to address this crisis, stating, “By reaching children and families early with programs that build confidence, kindness, and resilience, we’re equipping Mesa’s students to make safe, healthy choices.”
The campaign will complement Mesa’s existing $1 million community grant program, which has allocated funds to seven organizations, including Jacob’s Hope, aiding opioid-impacted newborns. This proactive strategy underscores Mesa’s dedication to prevention, education, and youth support.
The educational materials provided by The Be Kind People Project will feature evidence-based, age-appropriate content on healthy practices and emotional resilience. Renee Parker, Director of Community Partnerships for Mesa Public Schools, highlighted the importance of this initiative by stating, “We are deeply grateful to the City of Mesa for its continued support in helping our schools educate students about the serious dangers of opioid misuse.”
Mesa, now the second-largest recipient of opioid settlement funds in Maricopa County, is tactically deploying these resources to confront the crisis and enact long-lasting change. The official launch event for the campaign is scheduled for October 22 at the Arizona Museum of Natural History, where media representatives are invited to witness the kickoff. RSVP is available via email at [email protected].
As the opioid crisis continues to impact families across Arizona, Mesa’s innovative approach aims to inspire other communities to take similar action. The focus on youth education and resilience is a crucial step in combating this ongoing public health emergency. Stay tuned for updates as this important initiative unfolds.
