Ethel Cain Apologizes After Early Show Closure in Paris
Ethel Cain has expressed her heartfelt apologies to fans following an emotional incident during her concert in Paris on October 17, 2023. The alt-pop singer abruptly left the stage at the iconic L’Olympia venue after performing just three songs, walking off in tears while attempting to deliver her fourth track, “Nettles.” This unexpected turn left the audience disappointed and confused.
According to venue staff, the early conclusion of the show was due to “technical issues” and “unforeseen circumstances.” In response to the outpouring of concern and disappointment from attendees, Cain took to Instagram Stories to clarify the situation. She wrote, “Hi Paris. My apologies for the show last night. I’ve been having a bit of a time lately and sometimes it unpredictably bleeds over onto the stage.”
The singer further expressed her regret, stating, “I’m sorry I wasn’t able to finish the set but I’m looking forward to tonight’s show and I can’t wait to see all of you. To everyone who attended last night, I apologize again for the disappointment and the planning that I’m sure went into you attending. It means a lot to me that you came and I’m sorry I let you down.”
Context of the Performance
The Paris show was a part of Cain’s European tour promoting her sophomore album, Willoughby Tucker, I’ll Always Love You, which was released in August 2023. This album marks a significant chapter in her artistic journey, encapsulating themes of trauma, Americana, and Southern Gothic mythology. The setlist for the night was expected to feature tracks from both her new album and her critically acclaimed 2022 debut, Preacher’s Daughter.
Despite the setback, a second show at L’Olympia is scheduled for October 19, 2023, indicating Cain’s commitment to her fans and her performance.
Recent Challenges for the Artist
The emotional breakdown during the concert comes in the wake of a turbulent few months for Cain. Earlier in July, old social media posts sparked controversy, leading her to publicly apologize for what she described as “shameful” content. She criticized those who brought the posts back to light, suggesting they were attempting to “destroy” her.
This incident was compounded by a recent social media exchange with fellow musician Lana Del Rey. In August, Del Rey shared a song snippet that appeared to reference Cain directly, which added to the tension surrounding her public image. In a playful yet pointed manner, Del Rey sang a line that included a mention of Cain, further drawing public attention to their relationship.
Following this exchange, Cain noted on her Instagram Stories, “update: lana del rey has blocked ethel cain on instagram,” indicating the ongoing dynamics between the two artists.
Ethel Cain’s journey, marked by both artistic triumphs and personal struggles, continues to unfold as she navigates the complexities of fame and creativity. As she prepares for her next performance in Paris, her fans remain hopeful for a more complete experience.
