A striking fusion of French elegance and Nashville’s vibrant character is embodied in a newly constructed home that marries traditional design with modern sensibilities. Located in Nashville, Tennessee, a city renowned for its country music scene, this residence showcases an architectural style that reflects both local charm and European sophistication. Leigh Misso of River Brook led the design, aiming to create inviting spaces for a family of six, including four children aged six to twelve.

This architectural approach, often referred to as French eclectic, draws inspiration from the balance and symmetry of 17th-century French design. It features elements such as arched doorways, steep roofs, and tall windows, all of which lend a timeless appeal to the home. Misso describes the significance of this blend, stating, “Southern design tells a story that honors a cosmopolitan past but lives fully in the present.”

Designing for Family and Functionality

The home, built by Ray Kash of Montgomery Classic Construction, was tailored to enhance the existing plans while prioritizing warmth and intimacy. Misso emphasizes the necessity of making grand spaces feel livable. “Yes, it was about creating homeliness instead of simply scaling everything up,” she explains. The focus was on adding depth and texture, incorporating features like plaster fireplaces and a custom kitchen hood.

The kitchen serves as a focal point, featuring an Arabescato marble worktop, white oak cabinetry, and brass fixtures, all sourced through River Brook. Misso’s design choices include custom leather stools from Coley Home and distinctive lighting by The Urban Electric Co. Each element contributes to a warm atmosphere, inviting family gatherings and daily activities.

In the dining room, deeper tones contrast with natural light, creating a sophisticated yet welcoming environment. Walls painted in Studio Green by Farrow & Ball are complemented by a striking chandelier from Visual Comfort & Co.. Misso highlights the energetic balance in the room, noting the importance of tactile elements like oak floors and luxurious fabrics.

Personalized Spaces Reflecting Individuality

The home’s design extends to the children’s bedrooms, where the individuality of each child is thoughtfully considered. In one son’s room, a daybed suspended from the ceiling captures his adventurous spirit, while a serene nook with a four-poster bed graces his sister’s space, providing a tranquil reading corner. “Outward reflection of character is so important,” Misso remarks, emphasizing how a home should cater to the unique needs of its inhabitants.

The main bathroom features decorative elements such as café curtains and elegant lighting, enhancing its intimate feel. Misso recalls a memorable moment when a custom ten-foot burlwood dining table was transported into place, requiring careful maneuvering to ensure its safe arrival.

An unexpected highlight of the home is a stunning 18th-century tapestry discovered in Paris. With a muted color palette of gold, ebony, and caramel, it was hung in the foyer, bringing a touch of history and elegance that resonates throughout the residence.
