UPDATE: The annual West Coast Giant Pumpkin Regatta has kicked off with a splash in Portland, Oregon, as participants paddled in massive, carved-out pumpkins on Sunday afternoon. The event, taking place at Tualatin’s Lake of the Commons, is not just a race but a celebration of creativity and community spirit.

Boaters dressed in lively costumes—from Captain America to a hot dog—hit the water with enthusiasm, all vying for the title at this unique event held on October 19, 2025. Participants showcased their Halloween best while racing to the finish line, but they also faced the challenge of staying afloat and avoiding waterlogging their pumpkins.

This year, standout participant Parker Johnson won first place in the costume contest with his creative rendition of The Very Hungry Caterpillar. Johnson described the inspiration behind his costume, saying, “I was just chatting with my family in the car, like, just brainstorming things to do. And my dad thought up the idea of a caterpillar eating its way up out of the pumpkin. I thought that was really fun, so I went with it.”

Now in its 21st year, the regatta continues to attract attention for its unique blend of sport and artistry. The pumpkins used in the race are provided by the Pacific Giant Vegetable Growers, and paddlers are selected through a lottery system. Each participant receives a giant pumpkin, paddle, and life vest, ensuring a safe and entertaining experience.

The family-friendly atmosphere is enhanced by costume requirements, and all paddlers must be at least 18 years old. As the excitement builds, participants and spectators alike are eager to see who will take home the coveted title this year.

With the event drawing large crowds and capturing the imagination of attendees, the West Coast Giant Pumpkin Regatta is more than just a race—it’s a community celebration that highlights creativity, competition, and fun. Stay tuned for updates as the regatta progresses and watch for this year’s winners to be announced soon!
