Delta Air Lines is set to introduce a significant change to its Airbus A321neo fleet by launching a new subfleet that features an impressive 44 first class seats. This configuration, which more than doubles the current offering of 20 first class seats, is designed to meet evolving demand on transcontinental routes. Overview of Delta’s A321neo Fleet

Currently, Delta operates a total of 79 Airbus A321neos, with an additional 71 on order. Five aircraft remain in storage since their delivery, bringing the total to 155 A321neos. The standard configuration for most of these planes includes 194 seats, which are divided into 20 Delta First seats, 60 Delta Comfort seats, and 114 Delta Main seats. This setup is comparable to those used by American Airlines and United Airlines on their A321neo aircraft.

The A321neo, equipped with the Pratt & Whitney PW1100G engines, boasts modern features such as sharklets and a refreshed interior. Delta primarily uses these aircraft to replace its aging A320-200 fleet and to enhance its narrowbody operations, alongside plans to integrate 100 Boeing 737 MAX 10 aircraft into its lineup.

Introducing the 44-First-Class Configuration

In a notable departure from the standard layout, 21 of Delta’s new A321neos will be configured with a three-class setup, catering specifically to high-demand transcontinental routes. Data from aeroLOPA indicates that these planes will include 16 DeltaOne suites, 12 Delta Premium Select seats, 54 Delta Comfort seats, and 66 Delta Main seats, totaling 148 seats.

The decision to introduce the new configuration stems from certification issues faced with the DeltaOne suites. While the airline awaits certification for the new Safran Vue seats, which are designed to enhance passenger privacy, it has opted to replace these with Delta First seats in the interim. This practical approach allows Delta to avoid incurring additional storage costs while keeping its aircraft operational.

The new configuration will feature 44 Delta First seats, utilizing the Recaro CL4710 seats already in use within the existing fleet. This setup aligns with industry trends, where airlines often market premium offerings in various ways. The economy section will remain unchanged, maintaining the balance of 54 Delta Comfort seats and 66 Delta Main seats, resulting in a total of 164 seats on the aircraft.
