Chronic Insomnia Linked to Accelerated Brain Aging in New Study

Persistent sleeplessness may pose a greater threat than previously understood, with new research indicating a significant link between chronic insomnia and accelerated brain aging. A study published on September 10, 2023, in the journal Neurology, reveals that older individuals suffering from chronic insomnia demonstrate a higher likelihood of experiencing cognitive decline and structural brain changes.
The research involved 2,750 cognitively healthy adults with an average age of 70. Over a follow-up period averaging 5.6 years, participants underwent annual assessments measuring executive functioning, visual-spatial reasoning, and other cognitive dimensions. The findings showed that 14% of those with chronic insomnia developed mild cognitive impairment or dementia, compared to just 10% of those without insomnia. This difference is noteworthy in the context of cognitive health.
According to Diego Z. Carvalho, a sleep medicine specialist at the Mayo Clinic and the study’s lead author, the results further substantiate that suboptimal sleep might be a precursor to neurodegenerative conditions. He emphasized that while there is a clear association, the study does not establish causation. “It could also be that poor sleep early on can be an indicator of cognitive decline,” Carvalho explained. “It’s very hard to untangle.”
Key Findings on Sleep and Cognitive Health
Another critical aspect of the study highlighted by Santiago Clocchiatti-Tuozzo, a neurology resident at Yale New Haven Hospital, is that individuals with insomnia who reported fewer hours of sleep experienced worse cognitive outcomes and greater brain changes. Clocchiatti-Tuozzo noted, “If confirmed in future studies, these results could help shape strategies to preserve long-term brain health by considering not just sleep quality but also how long people sleep.”
Research linking sleep quality to brain health has gained momentum over the past decade. A landmark study published in 2021 in JAMA Neurology found that both insufficient and excessive sleep, defined as less than six hours or more than nine hours, correlated with cognitive difficulties. Additionally, these sleep patterns were associated with other health issues, including increased body mass index and heightened symptoms of depression.
The Importance of Sleep for Brain Function
According to Karin G. Johnson, a sleep neurologist based in Springfield, Massachusetts, the findings underscore the significance of adequate rest for brain health. Johnson, who is a fellow at the American Academy of Neurology and not involved in the current study, explained that the brain’s ability to clear out toxins is closely tied to circadian rhythms, which function optimally during sleep.
She expressed hope that improved sleep habits among younger generations could foster a healthier population in the future. Johnson advocates for policy changes, such as later school start times, to encourage better sleep practices. “It’s important to lay that foundation of giving people enough time to sleep,” she said.
As research continues to unravel the complexities of sleep and its impact on cognitive health, the need for effective strategies to promote better sleep hygiene becomes increasingly critical. Understanding the relationship between sleep duration, quality, and cognitive function may pave the way for preventative measures against cognitive decline as populations age.
