Leominster celebrated a significant milestone on October 16, 2023, as the Neddy Latimer House was officially named in honor of Neddy Latimer, the longtime Executive Director of the Spanish American Center. This new shelter aims to provide a supportive environment for individuals seeking assistance and a fresh start.

The naming ceremony was marked by a joyful atmosphere, with community members gathered to pay tribute to Latimer’s enduring commitment to improving lives. Doug Bushman, Executive Director of the Fitchburg Housing Authority and CEO of Opportunities for Hope, praised Latimer’s dedication, stating, “This is not just a building. It is a beacon of hope.” He emphasized her passion for serving those in need, adding that “there are children and families in need,” which drove the initiative to create the shelter.

Bushman acknowledged the collaborative effort that made the project possible, revealing that over $3 million was invested to ensure the shelter meets safety and comfort standards. He expressed gratitude to the various organizations involved, including the Spanish American Center and the United Way of North Central Massachusetts, which were pivotal in securing initial funding.

Community Leaders Celebrate Latimer’s Legacy

Mayor Dean Mazzarella also took the stage, commending Latimer for her nearly four-decade commitment to serving the community. He highlighted her influence, declaring, “Neddy is really the story of us.” The mayor’s light-hearted remarks about funding projects underscored the respect and affection colleagues have for Latimer, who has become a cornerstone of local advocacy.

The event drew attention from various stakeholders, including representatives from Heading Home, a leading provider of emergency and transitional housing. Bushman noted the importance of continuing collaboration with Latimer and her team to help individuals secure jobs and education.

Participants at the ceremony included Kory Eng, President and CEO of the United Way of North Central Massachusetts, who remarked on Latimer’s proactive approach. He stated, “The Spanish American Center is two steps ahead of us. All the time,” recognizing Latimer’s unwavering dedication to community welfare.

A Tribute to Service and Compassion

During the ceremony, attendees shared heartfelt anecdotes about Latimer’s impact. Thomas Hughes, Chair of both the Fitchburg Housing Authority and Opportunities for Hope, described the gathering as “a celebration and a declaration of gratitude.” He emphasized that the Neddy Latimer House symbolizes care and community, stating, “Everyone who seeks help here will be greeted by her name.”

Latimer’s husband, Jose Latimer, watched with pride as the community honored his wife. The emotional unveiling of the shelter’s sign drew applause, and when Latimer addressed the crowd, she expressed her gratitude, saying, “This place will become a beacon of hope.” Her words resonated deeply with those in attendance, reinforcing the shelter’s purpose as a transformative space.

The ceremony concluded with a toast led by Bushman, celebrating Latimer’s legacy and the collaborative effort that brought the shelter to fruition. As participants enjoyed refreshments and toured the warm and inviting facility, Father Julio Granados from the Holy Family of Nazareth Church provided a benediction, highlighting the goodness within everyone and wishing for the shelter to be a place of peace.

The Neddy Latimer House stands not only as a shelter but as a testament to a lifetime of service, compassion, and dedication to the community, ensuring that Latimer’s legacy will continue to inspire future generations.
