Discover Andy Warhol’s Iconic Cowboys and Indians Collection

Andy Warhol’s vibrant Cowboys and Indians portfolio, a collection of ten screen prints, has drawn attention as a significant piece of pop art history. Created in 1986, just a year prior to Warhol’s passing, this collection reflects his distinctive style and cultural commentary, focusing on themes related to the American West. Each print, measuring 36 by 36 inches (914 by 914 mm), is part of a limited edition of 250 and features Warhol’s signature, signed and numbered in pencil.

The prints were produced on Lenox Museum Board and printed by Rupert Jasen Smith. Published by Gaultney, Klineman Art, Inc., the portfolio includes various subjects, such as Mother and Child, Kachina Dolls, Annie Oakley, General Custer, Indian Head Nickel, Geronimo, Plains Indian Shield, Teddy Roosevelt, and a striking portrait of John Wayne.

Artistic Legacy and Legal Challenges

The portrait of John Wayne is particularly notable, inspired by a still from the 1962 film The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance. Following Wayne’s death in 1979, Warhol faced legal challenges from the Wayne family regarding the unauthorized use of the actor’s likeness. To mitigate these legal risks, Warhol inscribed the “John Wayne” prints with the term “unique,” effectively turning them into distinct objects.

As part of a settlement agreement, the Warhol Foundation gifted several prints from the Cowboys and Indians portfolio to the Wayne family. Some of these prints are now featured in exhibitions, inviting visitors to engage with Warhol’s artistic genius and the complex cultural narratives present in his work.
