Decatur Community Mourns Passing of Longtime Tax Consultant Geary Washburn
Geary Lewis Washburn, a respected tax consultant and devoted family man from Decatur, Texas, passed away Tuesday, April 28, 2026, surrounded by loved ones, marking the end of a remarkable life dedicated to family and community.
The funeral service for Washburn will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 2, at First Baptist Decatur, with burial following at Oaklawn Cemetery. Family and friends are invited to gather at the church starting one hour before the service. The ceremony will be officiated by John Hogan and Gerre Joiner.
A Life of Dedication to Family, Faith, and Profession
Born June 14, 1940, in Alvord, Texas, Geary Washburn built a lifelong bond with his community through over 51 years of service as a self-employed tax consultant. Married to Linda Ann Stevens since December 8, 1961, Washburn’s life was deeply rooted in family, faith, and service.
Washburn’s devotion extended beyond his work and family. He was an active member of First Baptist Decatur, where he once served as church treasurer. His leadership in the community was also highlighted by his role as president of the Decatur Rotary Club.
Remembered for His Warmth and Outdoor Passions
Geary was well known for his love of travel with his wife, summers spent at the coast, and joy in farming activities including fishing and caring for livestock alongside his sons and grandchildren. A former athlete, he graduated from Alvord High School where he excelled as co-captain of the football team.
“His customers were more than clients; they were lifelong friends,” said representatives from Hawkins Funeral Home, which is handling arrangements. “His warmth and dedication will be deeply missed across the community.”
Survived by Close Family and Cherished by Many
Geary Washburn is survived by his wife Linda, his sons Steve (Laurie) of Decatur and Lance (Emily) of Kaufman, and five grandchildren: Fallon (David Cowan), Hallie Nicole, Geary Newman, and Emma Lane Washburn. He is also survived by his brother Bobby Washburn and a wide circle of extended family and friends.
Washburn was preceded in death by his brother Harold Washburn, underscoring the loss felt by close kin.
