Albany State Baseball Charges into SIAC Tournament with Title and NCAA Bid at Stake

Albany State Baseball Begins High-Stakes SIAC Tournament Run Today in Macon

Albany State Golden Rams open their quest to defend the SIAC Championship today at noon against the Miles College Golden Bears at Luther Williams Field in Macon. With the postseason stakes at their highest, the Golden Rams are not only protecting their title but chasing a coveted automatic berth to the NCAA Division II South Regional.

The No. 2-seeded Albany State (27-6) face a familiar opponent in Miles College, whom they swept last week, but head coach Scot Hemmings stresses that tournament baseball resets the scoreboard. “Tournament baseball is tough because everyone is 0-0,” Hemmings told reporters this week. “Each team will bring their best with energy and emotion. You cannot afford errors or free passes.”

This urgency reflects the intensity permeating the four-day tournament where few advantages exist. Hemmings credits his team’s recent turnaround to improved health, tighter defense, and perfect timing. “We’ve cleaned up our defense and gotten some guys healthy over the last three weeks,” he said.

Depth in Pitching Staff Puts Albany State Ahead

Critical to Albany State’s confidence is its extensive bullpen. Hemmings emphasized the preparedness of his pitching rotation: “We have developed 14 arms and feel comfortable with every one of them. That was by design—we wanted to be strong at the end.”

Amid the rapid sequence of games in a tournament format, fresh arms could determine survival. Hemmings remains wary of the top-seeded Spring Hill Badgers (29-4) and the tightly matched field but highlights the unpredictable nature of tournament play.

“The tournament is usually won by a pitcher who hasn’t had a lot of innings but has to pitch in a big moment,” Hemmings explained, recalling how Quindon Wright’s clutch performance fuelled their championship run last year.

Beyond the rotation, players like Ryan Brown behind the plate and bullpen arms such as Chase Ledger and Luke Hayes could prove decisive. The return of Chip Cooper after two years away adds quietly to a roster built for pressure.

Focus on Present as Albany State Eyes Repeat

Hemmings warns against looking ahead to potential matchups, including a possible showdown with Spring Hill. “We have our work cut out the first two games,” he said. “We cannot look ahead.”

As each team starts fresh in this tournament, Albany State’s formula is straightforward: if their best players outperform opponents’, the title and NCAA berth are theirs. But the path remains steep, with strong teams across the bracket equally hungry for glory.

The outcome will have national implications as another NCAA tournament spot hangs in the balance, and the Golden Rams are determined to leave Macon with a story worth remembering.
