UPDATE: In a stunning display of skill, brothers Zam and Max Plante both netted collegiate-highs of four points, leading the University of Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs to a commanding 7-3 victory over the Bemidji State Beavers on October 27, 2023, at Sanford Center.

Both Plante brothers contributed significantly, each scoring two goals and providing two assists, while their linemate Jayson Shaugabay added a goal and three assists for his own career-best night. The Bulldogs now stand poised for a rematch tonight at 6:07 p.m., showcasing their resilience after overcoming an early two-goal deficit.

The Beavers struck first, scoring twice within the opening 4:50 of the game. However, the Bulldogs quickly responded, with Shaugabay and Max Plante leveling the score before senior captain Joey Pierce put UMD ahead with an assist from Max. Max later scored his first shorthanded goal as a Bulldog, breaking away to add to the lead.

Adam Gajan, the sophomore goaltender, made 17 saves on 20 shots, helping secure the victory. This game marked a pivotal moment for the Bulldogs, who had struggled with their power play earlier in the season. The team converted 2-for-4 on power plays, a marked improvement from their previous 1-for-15 start.

Max Plante, now averaging 2.2 points per game, has made a significant impact this season with five goals and six assists. In total, the Plante brothers and Shaugabay have combined for 28 points in just five games. Zam Plante also contributed to the scoring surge, amassing eight points with three goals and five assists.

Joey Pierce’s goal, just his second career score, reflects the Bulldogs’ deep talent pool. Freshman Daniel Shlaine scored his first collegiate goal shortly after Max’s second, extending the lead to 5-2 early in the second period.

The Beavers managed to score through former UMD recruit Hudson Thornton, who had previously committed to the Bulldogs before choosing to play junior hockey. This game is a crucial component of the Bulldogs’ season as they prepare for a challenging schedule, including upcoming away games against Minnesota and North Dakota.

As the Bulldogs gear up for their rematch against the Beavers, fans and players alike are eager to see if the momentum can be maintained. Tonight’s game at Amsoil Arena promises to be an exciting continuation of this nonconference showdown.
