Panthers Eye Major Upgrade with Former Bears Defender Tremaine Edmunds

The Carolina Panthers are reportedly considering a significant addition to their defensive lineup by pursuing former Chicago Bears linebacker Tremaine Edmunds. The team, which recently captured the NFC South title for the first time since 2015, is looking to strengthen its front seven after a mixed performance in the 2024 season.

Despite finishing the regular season with an 8-9 record and suffering a narrow 34-31 playoff loss to the Los Angeles Rams, the Panthers are determined to build on their successes. However, challenges remain, particularly in their defensive strategy. Under the leadership of defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero, the Panthers have struggled with both run defense and pass rush, issues that have persisted year after year.

General manager Dan Morgan is actively seeking solutions to bolster the team’s defensive capabilities. Recent reports from Zachary Pereles of CBS Sports suggest that the Panthers could target Edmunds, who was recently released by the Bears after they granted him permission to seek a trade. Pereles noted that although there were no suitors for the linebacker, his potential fit behind standout defensive tackle Derrick Brown could enhance the Panthers’ defensive performance.

The Panthers had the league’s worst run defense during the 2024 season, allowing an alarming average of 179.8 yards per game. While they improved to 123.3 rushing yards per contest this season, their last three games highlighted ongoing vulnerabilities, with opponents rushing for 169, 163, and 140 yards, respectively.

Last offseason, Morgan signed former Rams player Christian Rozeboom to a one-year deal, and although Rozeboom led the team in tackles, he is not seen as a long-term solution. On the other hand, Edmunds is known for his strong run-stopping abilities, making him a valuable asset for Evero’s defensive unit.

As the Panthers prepare for their upcoming season opener in September, addressing these defensive weaknesses will be crucial. With the potential addition of a player like Tremaine Edmunds, the Panthers hope to solidify their defense and improve their chances of a deeper playoff run.
