The New York Islanders have strengthened their roster by acquiring Brayden Schenn from the St. Louis Blues ahead of the NHL trade deadline on March 6, 2025. This move adds a seasoned veteran playmaker to the Isles as they aim for a successful playoff run. In exchange, the Islanders sent forward Jonathan Drouin, a 2026 first-round pick, a third-round pick, and Swedish goalie prospect Marcus Gidlof to St. Louis.
Schenn, 34, has been the captain of the Blues for the last three seasons. This season, he has tallied 12 goals and 16 assists over 61 games. Despite a dip in his average ice time, which stands at 16:41—the lowest since the 2013-14 season—Schenn’s experience is expected to be invaluable for the Islanders. His contract extends through the 2027-28 season with a cap hit of $6.5 million.
The first-round pick involved in the trade was originally acquired from the Colorado Avalanche as part of last season’s Brock Nelson trade. Drouin is signed through next season with a cap hit of $4 million. Schenn had a 15-team no-trade clause and was speculated to be interested in a move to the Avalanche; reports confirm that he waived this clause to facilitate the trade to New York.
Durability has been a hallmark of Schenn’s career. He played all 82 games during the previous season, contributing significantly to the Blues’ historic Stanley Cup victory in 2019. His versatility allows him to play both center and wing, a benefit to the Islanders as they navigate a competitive playoff landscape.
As the Islanders sit third in the Metropolitan Division with 75 points from 63 games, they are just three points ahead of the Columbus Blue Jackets, who have 72 points in 61 games and are vying for a playoff spot. The acquisition of Schenn could provide the boost the Islanders need as they look to solidify their postseason positioning.
The Blues, on the other hand, are in a retooling phase, having come close to trading defenseman Colton Parayko to the Buffalo Sabres before he used his trade protection to reject the deal. This trade marks a significant shift for St. Louis as they look to rebuild their roster for future seasons.
With the addition of Schenn, the Islanders not only enhance their lineup but also signal their intention to be serious contenders in the upcoming playoffs. The team will look to integrate him quickly as they head into the final stretch of the regular season.
