Community Mourns the Loss of John Emmons, 83, Devoted Family Man

John Emmons, an esteemed member of the Gorham community, passed away on February 27, 2026, at the age of 83. His dedication to family, faith, and service left an indelible mark on those who knew him. Born on January 14, 1943, in Adrian, Michigan, John was the son of the late Carl and Pearl (Smith) Emmons.

After graduating from Sand Creek High School in 1961, John pursued an accounting degree at Stautzenberger College in Toledo, Ohio, finishing in 1965. He married Cheri Kay Sullins on October 4, 1963, in Weston, Michigan. Their marriage spanned over 63 years, characterized by a strong bond rooted in faith and family values.

Throughout his professional journey, John dedicated 28 years to Taylor Freezer of Michigan, where he was known for his exceptional work ethic and integrity, ultimately serving as a partner for 15 years. Beyond his career, John’s commitment to his community was evident in his active participation at Galilee Baptist Church in Gorham.

In retirement, John continued to make a difference through volunteering with Meals on Wheels and at Gorham House Memory Care. He also contributed his skills as a board member, including a role as Treasurer, sharing his time generously with various organizations.

John was a passionate supporter of the Detroit Lions and Tigers, and enjoyed playing golf. Yet, his greatest joy was spending time with his grandchildren, whom he cherished deeply. He is survived by his wife, Cheri Emmons; his children, Warren (Sarah) Emmons of Seattle, Washington, Kathy (Adam) Griffiths of Scarborough, Maine, and Aaron Emmons of Monroe, Washington; and his seven grandchildren: Isabella (Shaine) Goodwin, Aidan Emmons, Bennett Fogg, John (Hailey) Emmons, Alden Griffiths, Harrison Griffiths, and Eva Babler. Additionally, he was blessed with two great-grandchildren, Adeline and Emery Goodwin.

John is also survived by his siblings, Mary Helen Love, Janet Bennett, and Norman Emmons, while he was predeceased by his brothers, Richard and Donald Emmons. The family expresses their heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Avita of Stroudwater and Compassus Hospice for their compassionate care during his final days.

John Emmons will be remembered for his quiet strength, unwavering faith, and deep love for his family. A spring service will be held in Gorham, Maine, with a summer celebration of life planned in Michigan; further details will be announced.
