BREAKING: Fairport’s standout player, Yomar Castellano, has just been named the Division VII Northeast Lakes District Player of the Year by the Ohio Prep Sports Media Association (OPSMA). This announcement, made on March 3, 2026, highlights Castellano’s exceptional performance this season, leading the Skippers with an impressive 19.1 points, 3.4 rebounds, and 2.4 steals per game.
This recognition is a crucial step in the All-Ohio selection process, emphasizing the significance of regular-season achievements. Fairport boasts a stellar record of 21-2 and is set to compete in the D-VII district final on March 7. The team’s success has been further elevated by Coach Dustin Ettinger, who has also been honored as the D-VII Coach of the Year.
The accolades don’t stop there. Coach Josh Jakacki of Kenston, whose team holds a 20-3 record, has been recognized for his leadership after guiding the Bombers through a remarkable 14-game win streak. Kenston has four players averaging double figures, showcasing their depth and talent.
In Division V, David Bargar of Chagrin Falls shares the Coach of the Year honor with Jeff Holzhauer of Keystone. Chagrin Falls has rebounded from a shaky start (3-4) to a staggering 16-game winning streak, cementing their position as the second seed in Division V. Their defensive prowess has been a key factor, holding opponents to an average of just 46.9 points.
Meanwhile, Shawn McGregor of Kirtland also received Coach of the Year honors in Division VI, leading his Hornets to a 20-3 record following a state semifinal appearance last season.
The all-district teams feature a broad representation from the region. In Division I, Mentor’s Jack Kennedy and Tony Katava earned first and second-team spots, respectively. Notably, Euclid’s Mekhi Asberry and Kye Owens were named to the first team in Division II, with their teammate DJ Jenkins earning second-team honors.
In Division III, a strong showing from local talent includes first-team honors for Hawken’s Prince Williams, Geneva’s Caden Proy, and others. Division IV recognizes NDCL’s Brendan Hernan and Benedictine’s Steph Bohanon among the top players.
