The High Point High School girls’ basketball team concluded their season with a commendable overall record of 17-9, showcasing remarkable growth and teamwork throughout the year. Under the guidance of head coach Gary Ruban, the Wildcats demonstrated resilience and skill, particularly after a significant victory against North Warren on February 5. This win not only followed a tough loss but also sparked a winning streak that carried them confidently into the NJSIAA State Tournament.
Ruban highlighted the turning point of their season, saying, “The North Warren win was a big win for us in many ways. It came after a loss and also set us up for a big winning streak down the stretch.” The momentum from that game culminated in a standout performance on February 26, where the Wildcats defeated Passaic Valley 50-19 in the first round of the NJSIAA North Jersey, Section 1, Group 2 tournament. In that match, Rhiannon Conover led the team with a game-high 15 points, contributing to the Wildcats’ impressive display of confidence on the court.
Leadership and Development Drive Success
Strong leadership was a cornerstone of High Point’s success this season. Ruban praised Kennedy Shepherd for her behind-the-scenes influence, stating, “She was a huge part of our team in the leadership role.” Shepherd played a vital role in organizing events such as the Pretty in Pink game and youth clinics, while also serving as a stabilizing presence for her teammates during challenging moments.
Another key leader, Claire Sieminski, exemplified dedication and hard work. Ruban pointed out her relentless approach to winning, which inspired others on the team. As the season unfolded, several players exhibited significant improvements, including Daphne Mathews and Addison Yanoff, who consistently contributed to the team’s progress. Conover, who transitioned from junior varsity to a reliable scoring option, earned her place on the varsity team through perseverance and commitment.
The Wildcats faced formidable competition throughout the season, finishing 5-5 in the challenging Northwest Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Freedom Division. After their successful opening round against Passaic Valley, High Point’s journey in the sectional tournament came to an end with a loss to Jefferson in the quarterfinals.
Key Players Shine on the Court
Ruban also reflected on the contributions of standout players, particularly Brooke Wagner, who dominated the court during her three years with the team. With an impressive total of 161 blocked shots this season, Wagner averaged over six blocks per game, demonstrating her defensive prowess.
Additionally, Grace Elston emerged as a vital 3-point shooting threat, significantly impacting many of the Wildcats’ victories over the past two years. Her shooting ability was instrumental in establishing leads and securing wins, further solidifying the team’s competitive edge.
As the Wildcats look ahead, the foundation built during this strong season will serve as a launching pad for future success. With experienced leaders and emerging talents, the team remains poised for continued growth in the seasons to come.
