Eagles’ New Offense: DeVonta Smith Poised for Major Impact

In a significant shift for the Philadelphia Eagles, the team is set to implement a new offensive system under Sean Mannion, which is expected to enhance their running game and improve the overall effectiveness of key players. Coach Nick Sirianni expressed particular optimism about wide receiver DeVonta Smith, highlighting his potential to thrive in this revamped scheme as he enters his sixth season.

Sirianni firmly dismissed the notion that Smith has reached his peak, responding emphatically, “Oh, no,” when asked about the receiver’s development. He praised Smith’s continuous improvement, noting, “I think you saw him have a great year in 2025… Guys that are tough, that love football, that are smart football players, and are talented, have a tendency to reach their ceiling, God-willing. And I think that’s what you’re seeing.”

Potential Changes and A.J. Brown’s Status

The future of fellow receiver A.J. Brown remains uncertain, with both Sirianni and Eagles general manager Howie Roseman providing vague responses regarding his status for the 2026 season. Roseman acknowledged the fluid nature of roster discussions, stating, “There are a lot of conversations in the offseason about players on your teams, on other teams. That’s really the job. That’s the fun part about the offseason, the opportunities to improve your team.”

If Brown were to be traded, it could pave the way for Smith to step into the role of the clear No. 1 receiver. Last season, Smith led the Eagles in receiving yards with 1,008, just ahead of Brown, who recorded 1,003. Smith’s performance has been impressive, with three seasons surpassing 1,000 receiving yards. This includes a career-high of 1,196 yards in 2022, coinciding with Brown’s record-breaking season of 1,496 yards.

Even in a crowded offensive landscape, Smith has consistently shown his ability to produce. He had 113 targets last season, only eight fewer than Brown. This trend suggests that should Brown be traded, Smith could see an increase in targets, leading to higher reception and yardage totals.

Offensive Strategy Under Mannion

As the Eagles transition to Mannion’s offensive strategy, enhancing the running game will be crucial. The team struggled last season, ranking 24th in total yards per game (311) and 19th in points scored (22.3). A more effective running game, particularly through the efforts of Saquon Barkley, who rushed for 1,140 yards last season after a record-setting 2,005 yards in 2025, is expected to open up opportunities for the passing game.

Sirianni emphasized the adaptability of great players like Barkley, stating, “My experience with great football players is you come in and you’re like, ‘Hey, Saquon, we’re going to run inside zone.’ He’s going to be really good at it.” This versatility will allow the Eagles to explore various offensive schemes, which could further benefit Smith’s performance.

Ultimately, the effectiveness of the Eagles’ offense in Mannion’s system will rely on several factors, including the health of the offensive line and the dynamic capabilities of quarterback Jalen Hurts. Sirianni firmly believes that getting Smith involved will be vital to the team’s success, stating, “It’s important that he’s seeing targets every game because he does good things when he gets those things.”

As the Eagles prepare for the upcoming season, all eyes will be on Smith to see how he capitalizes on the new offensive opportunities. The potential for increased involvement in the passing game, coupled with a more robust running attack, positions Smith as a key player to watch as Philadelphia aims for success in the highly competitive landscape of the NFL.
