John S. Cuozzo, a cherished music educator and community figure, passed away peacefully on February 14, 2026, in Lafayette Township, New Jersey, at the age of 79. His life, marked by a profound love for music and a commitment to education, has left an indelible impact on countless students and fellow residents.
Born on May 7, 1946, in Jersey City, Cuozzo graduated from college in 1968 and embarked on a notable career in music education. He first taught at Hoboken High School, where he laid the groundwork for a career defined by his passion for nurturing young musicians. In 1975, he joined Kittatinny Regional High School, dedicating an impressive 29 years to fostering musical talent. Cuozzo retired in 2004, leaving behind a legacy of inspired students and a vibrant music program.
A Legacy of Musical Excellence
As a gifted conductor and arranger, Cuozzo’s influence extended far beyond the classroom. He spent many summers at the esteemed Interlochen Center for the Arts, inspiring aspiring musicians from across the nation. His distinguished career featured guest conducting at Carnegie Hall and directing numerous New Jersey All-State orchestras, operas, and Broadway productions. His musical arrangements were showcased at significant events throughout the United States, marking him as a prominent figure in the music community.
Colleagues and students alike recognized Cuozzo’s exceptional talent. To describe him as merely an accomplished maestro would fail to capture the depth of his impact. His contributions to music education and performance have set a standard that many strive to emulate.
Community Engagement and Personal Life
Beyond his professional achievements, Cuozzo was dedicated to community service. He served as a longstanding member of the Newton Rotary Club, where he championed charitable initiatives, particularly those aimed at supporting children in need. His commitment to service reflected his belief in the power of education and community support.
Cuozzo was also known for his love of reading and history. Friends and family remember him as a jokester with a quick wit and a talent for storytelling, bringing laughter and joy to those around him. His ability to connect with others left a lasting impression on everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.
He is survived by his sister, Diane O’Reilly; his brother, James Cuozzo, and sister-in-law, Barbara Hennig; his niece, Kristen O’Reilly; and his nephews, Marc O’Reilly, Daniel O’Reilly, along with their families. Cuozzo’s legacy will continue to resonate through the many lives he touched.
Visitation for Cuozzo will take place on February 27, from 15:00 to 19:00 at Smith-McCracken Funeral Home, located at 63 High Street, Newton, NJ. His funeral service will be held on February 28, at 11:00 at Christ Episcopal Church, situated at 62 Main Street, Newton.
