The BrickBox Theatre in Worcester is currently staging a vibrant reimagining of Shakespeare’s classic play, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, set in a 1980s gay club environment. The production, which runs until February 14, 2024, immerses the audience in a world filled with punk aesthetics and neon lights while exploring timeless themes of love, friendship, and societal pressures.
Director Dr. Kathryn Moncrief explains that the enduring appeal of Shakespeare’s work lies in its deep exploration of relationships. “A Midsummer Night’s Dream remains a favorite because it is, at heart, a play about relationships — friendships, family bonds, and of course love,” she said. The production aims to resonate with audiences not only through its nostalgic setting but also by inviting a diverse crowd to share in the joy of performance, regardless of their familiarity with Shakespeare’s works.
The opening night, held on January 28, 2024, set the tone for an energetic run, with positive feedback from attendees. Moncrief encouraged couples to experience the show together during this romantic season. “Whether you are familiar with Shakespeare or not, this production welcomes everyone to laugh and find joy,” she added.
Celebrating 1980s Culture
Drawing inspiration from the rich culture of the 1980s, the production features iconic fashion and music that defined the era. Moncrief noted, “This production takes full advantage of the sights and sounds of the 80s.” The atmosphere is further enhanced by a related art exhibition at the Jean McDonough Arts Center, which complements the themes of the play through a provocative display of queer-themed artwork.
A dedicated team of 30 cast and crew members from Worcester, Boston, New York, Maine, and Rhode Island contribute to the production. Among them, Livy Scanlon, Artistic Director of The Hanover Theatre Repertory, takes on the role of Puck, a pivotal character in the narrative. Scanlon shared her enthusiasm for the project, stating, “Joy, magic, and transformation are alive and well. Bring all your friends! And your Valentine.”
Audience engagement has been promising, with strong ticket sales attributed to the production’s vibrant concept and positive reviews.
Thematic Resonance
Moncrief emphasized the relevance of the play’s themes, particularly in today’s context. She remarked that the narrative begins with characters seeking freedom from a restrictive environment, paralleling the societal pressures of the 1980s, such as Wall Street greed and the emergence of conservative family values. The characters escape to a nightclub, aptly named The Wood, which serves as a sanctuary for love and acceptance.
“This production beautifully encapsulates the essence of discovery and transformation,” Moncrief stated. For those interested in experiencing this unique theatrical interpretation, tickets are available through the theatre’s website at hanovertheatre.org/event/midsummer-nights-dream.
