Austin Airport Celebrates Expansion with New 75,000 Square Feet

The Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS) has marked a significant milestone in its expansion efforts with the completion of the West Infill project. A ribbon-cutting ceremony held on February 23, 2024, unveiled the addition of over 75,000 square feet to the Barbara Jordan Terminal. This expansion aims to improve passenger experience and enhance airport efficiency.

The new facility introduces a dedicated TSA checkpoint, which is expected to streamline the security process for travelers. Alongside this, AUS has implemented several upgrades to its infrastructure, aiming to bolster security and operational efficiency. These improvements include a modernized Outbound Baggage Handling System, additional ticketing counters, new airline and operational spaces, and various art and design enhancements. Upgraded infrastructure features an independent HVAC system, new elevators, and revamped mechanical, electrical, and IT systems.

Ghizlane Badawi, Chief Executive Officer of AUS, emphasized the importance of the West Infill project, stating, “The completion of the West Infill project is a pivotal step forward for AUS and for our community. Our airport is serving 21+ million annual passengers, five years ahead of what our AUS 2040 Master Plan projected. This project is about more than adding space; it’s about delivering a better experience for every traveler as quickly as possible.”

The project represents a substantial investment of $241 million, funded through a combination of airport revenues, future revenue bonds, Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) grants, and $15.99 million from the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act. Notably, AUS has confirmed that no taxpayer dollars were utilized in this expansion.

As the airport continues to adapt to increasing passenger numbers, the West Infill project stands as a testament to its commitment to enhancing travel experiences and improving operational capabilities. With these new facilities and upgrades, AUS aims to provide a more efficient and enjoyable environment for travelers, supporting the growing demand for air travel in the region.
