The Marianna City Commission recognized Sergeant David Herndon of the Marianna Police Department on Tuesday for his exceptional public service. He received the Veterans of Foreign Wars National Law Enforcement Public Servant Citation, an award that celebrates not only professional excellence but also a profound commitment to community safety.
During the ceremony, Tyler Schaeffer from the VFW presented the award, highlighting the importance of recognizing those in roles critical to public safety. Schaeffer noted that each year, the VFW honors emergency medical technicians, law enforcement officers, and firefighters among others for their contributions. “For veterans, the recognition carries a particularly strong meaning,” he stated. “When we leave our families to serve, we trust that dedicated first responders like Sergeant Herndon are safeguarding our communities with professionalism, integrity, and courage.”
Colleagues of Herndon expressed deep respect for him, describing him as steady and reliable. He is known for stepping forward when help is needed, often before others even realize assistance is required. His approach reflects a career dedicated to service rather than seeking the spotlight.
Following the award presentation, Sergeant Herndon shared his feelings about the recognition. “To be recognized by the patrol division, the guys and ladies I work with, that means so much to me,” he said. His humility was evident as he emphasized that his motivation comes from serving his colleagues and the community.
The significance of the award resonates personally with Herndon, connecting deeply to his family’s military legacy. His grandfather, Sergeant Charles T. Green, retired from the U.S. Army after serving two tours in Vietnam with the 173rd Airborne Division. Green, a proud member of the VFW, has been a major inspiration for Herndon. “To be presented this award by the VFW means more to me than I can describe,” he reflected.
Known affectionately as “Sarge” among friends and colleagues, Herndon has served as a sergeant with the Marianna Police Department for the past ten years, a title he wears with pride. He recalled how his grandmother gave him his grandfather’s chevrons after his promotion, which he wears on special occasions, including Veterans Day and during the award ceremony. “I’ll wear them tonight in honor of him,” he stated, highlighting the connection between his family’s legacy and his own service.
The recognition of Sergeant David Herndon on Tuesday served as a poignant reminder of the dedication that underpins community safety. His commitment to public service reflects lasting values of humility and duty, embodying the spirit of those who serve in law enforcement. Such acknowledgments not only honor individual contributions but also reinforce the vital role that first responders play in maintaining safe and secure communities.
