UPDATE: The American Red Cross is issuing an urgent call for blood and platelet donations as severe winter storms have led to widespread cancellations of blood drives across the United States. Since January 2023, over 500 blood drives have been canceled due to hazardous conditions, resulting in more than 20,000 blood and platelet donations going uncollected.
These extreme weather conditions, including snow, ice, and dangerous cold, have not only halted donations but are also complicating the transportation of critical blood products. Timely deliveries to hospitals are now at risk, putting patient care in jeopardy.
The Red Cross is asking for immediate action from donors of all blood types, especially those in regions not affected by severe weather, to schedule their donations as soon as possible. Individuals in areas experiencing winter conditions are encouraged to donate when it is safe to do so.
The impact of this blood shortage is significant. Hospitals are being forced to postpone elective procedures, further straining an already pressured healthcare system. As inventories dip to dangerously low levels, doctors and trauma surgeons may face tough decisions regarding patient treatment.
To help address this urgent situation, donors can easily make appointments through the Blood Donor App, by visiting RedCrossBlood.org, or by calling 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767). As an added incentive, all blood and platelet donors from January 26 through February 28, 2026, will receive a $20 e-gift card to a merchant of their choice.
The American Red Cross plays a crucial role in supplying approximately 40% of the nation’s blood. The organization relies heavily on volunteers and donors to fulfill its mission of providing disaster relief, life-saving services, and humanitarian aid.
Patients in need are counting on your support. Share this urgent message to encourage others to step forward and donate. Together, we can help stabilize the blood supply and ensure that those in need receive timely and critical care.
