Community Remembers Cathy McCurdy, Dedicated Volunteer and Leader

Catherine “Cathy” Shea McCurdy, a beloved figure in the Hermosa Beach community, passed away peacefully at her home on December 3, 2025, at the age of 74. Her death was attributed to complications from diabetes. Known for her extensive volunteer work and community leadership, Cathy leaves behind a legacy that touched the lives of many.

Born in Queens, New York, to Raymond and Erma “Susie” Shea, Cathy spent her formative years in Hermosa Beach. She graduated from Redondo Union High School in the class of 1969 and later married Richard H. “Dick” McCurdy in 1978. Together, they worked in the glass business at Shea Company in Hermosa Beach, but their most notable contributions were in community service.

Cathy served on the Hermosa Beach School Board and dedicated many years to working at the Hermosa Valley School. She was instrumental in founding the Kiwanis Builders Club at the school, which aimed to foster leadership and community service among students. Additionally, Cathy was a strong supporter of the Hermosa Beach Education Foundation and the Sister City Association.

Her commitment to public service extended beyond education. For nearly a decade, Cathy represented Hermosa Beach on the LA County Beach Commission, where she advocated for community interests and coastal preservation. Both Cathy and Dick were active members of the Kiwanis Club of Hermosa Beach, taking on various leadership roles, including serving as President.

In recognition of her significant contributions, Cathy was honored as the “Hermosa Beach Woman of the Year” in 1998. Her dedication to enhancing the community’s quality of life was evident in every project she undertook.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, February 21, at St. Cross Episcopal Church, located at 1818 Monterey Blvd., Hermosa Beach. Following the service, a celebration of Cathy’s life will take place at the Kiwanis Hall, situated at 2515 Valley Dr., Hermosa Beach.

Cathy McCurdy’s impact on Hermosa Beach will be felt for generations to come. Her unwavering commitment to service and community engagement serves as an inspiring example for all.
