The film Four Minus Three (or Vier Minus Drei) is set to make its world premiere in the Panorama section of the Berlin International Film Festival, showcasing an emotional narrative inspired by a true story. Directed by Austrian filmmaker Adrian Goiginger, the film explores themes of family, loss, grief, and hope, intertwined with the unexpected presence of clowns.
Starring Valerie Pachner and Robert Stadlober, the story follows Barbara, a professional clown whose life takes a tragic turn when she loses her partner Heli and their children in a car accident. The film’s synopsis highlights the profound challenges Barbara faces as she grapples with this unspeakable loss: “In the face of unspeakable loss, her belief in humor, hope, and humanity is put to the ultimate test.” It raises the question of whether humor can be a pathway back to life after such devastation.
Behind the Production
The screenplay for Four Minus Three is penned by Senad Halilbašić, based on the bestselling novel by Barbara Pachl-Eberhart. The film is produced by 2010 Entertainment in Austria and Giganten Film in Germany, with Goiginger serving as both director and producer alongside a team that includes Peter Wildling, Gerrit Klein, Martin Pfeil, and David Stöllinger.
Goiginger reflects on the film’s inception, stating that he initially found the story of a woman facing such profound loss too intense following the birth of his second child. However, through Halilbašić’s screenplay, he discovered that the narrative focuses more on hope and healing rather than merely depicting tragedy. “That made me want to make this film at all costs,” he recalls.
Performances and Distribution
The cast also includes Stefanie Reinsperger, Hanno Koffler, and Ronald Zehrfeld. Goiginger emphasizes the dedication of his lead actors, particularly highlighting Pachner’s commitment. “I’ve rarely seen anyone commit to a role the way Valerie Pachner does: 100 percent emotionally invested in every take, regardless of the consequences,” he notes. Stadlober’s performance is described as bringing humor and depth to his character.
Distribution for the film will be handled in Germany by Alamode Film and in Austria by Polyfilm. An exclusive clip from the film has been released, showcasing Barbara’s poignant memories of happier times with her family, further setting the emotional tone of the film.
As the film prepares for its premiere, audiences can expect a thought-provoking blend of humor and heartache, with the potential to resonate deeply with those who experience its journey. Four Minus Three is positioned not just as a tale of loss but as an exploration of resilience and the human spirit.
