Miami Dolphins quarterback Quinn Ewers has publicly endorsed Lee Munn as the next head coach of his alma mater, Southlake Carroll, which is currently in the midst of a coaching search. Ewers, who guided Carroll to a state runner-up finish in the 2020 season, expressed his support through a social media post directed at the Carroll Independent School District, school board president Cam Bryan, and Superintendent Jeremy Glenn.
The search for a new head coach at Southlake Carroll comes following the departure of Todd Dodge, who achieved an impressive record of 107 wins and 10 losses over eight seasons, including two state title game appearances. Munn, the associate head coach and defensive coordinator, has been instrumental in the team’s success since he joined the staff in 2018. Under his guidance, the team was recognized for boasting the second-best scoring defense among Dallas-area 6A schools, allowing an average of just 12.5 points per game and ranking as high as No. 3 nationally this season.
Ewers is not alone in his support for Munn. Numerous current and former players have taken to social media to advocate for his promotion. Former Carroll linebacker Eric Garza, now playing at Texas, emphatically stated, “Only one right answer! Lee Munn.” Additionally, former offensive lineman Drew Cunningham, who recently announced his transfer from Charlotte to North Texas, echoed that sentiment with the hashtag #HireMunn.
While Munn is a strong candidate, he is not the only one under consideration. Other potential candidates include Jeff Rayburn, head coach at Frisco Lone Star, and Jeff Joseph, head coach at Port Neches-Groves. Both coaches have connections to Southlake Carroll; Rayburn was a volunteer and played for Dodge at Carrollton Newman Smith, while Joseph spent a season on Dodge’s staff as a special teams coordinator and defensive assistant. This season, Rayburn’s team finished as the 5A Division I state runner-up, and Joseph’s squad won the 5A Division II state championship.
The Carroll ISD has indicated that the coaching search is progressing ahead of schedule. In a recent social media post, the district confirmed that interviews are actively being conducted, with plans to announce the new coach in February 2025. Two school board meetings are scheduled for next month, on February 5 and February 23, where further updates may be provided.
Despite speculation regarding a potential return of Todd Dodge, who previously led the team to four state titles from 2000 to 2006, the district remains focused on evaluating a diverse pool of highly qualified applicants. Bryan stated during a special board workshop meeting on January 12, “We want to be very clear: we will not rush this decision or settle for anything less than the right fit for our district.”
As the coaching search unfolds, the Southlake Carroll community remains engaged, eager to see who will take the reins of a program that has long been a powerhouse in Texas high school football. The decision will not only affect the immediate future of the football team but also the broader tradition and legacy of Southlake Carroll football.
