West Point Town Manager John Edwards Announces Retirement

West Point Town Manager John Edwards has officially announced his retirement after nearly 15 years in the role. During a meeting on January 13, Edwards presented his formal 30-day written notice to members of the West Point Town Council, confirming a decision he had discussed previously with council members.

As part of his transition, Edwards plans to utilize his remaining leave beginning March 1, with his official retirement date set for July 1. He expressed confidence in his successor, Assistant Town Manager Steve Hudgins, stating, “I am very comfortable you will all be in good hands with Steve leading the team.”

Years of Service and Community Engagement

Edwards has managed the daily operations of West Point, a town with a population of approximately 3,500 residents, since his appointment in August 2011. His extensive career in public service began in Smithfield, where he worked part-time in public works. He later advanced to become a planner for Isle of Wight County, followed by roles as assistant county administrator and emergency services coordinator in Surry County, and planner for Newport News.

Throughout his tenure, Edwards has been an active community member, engaging with local organizations and initiatives. He has served on various regional boards, including as chair of the Middle Peninsula Regional Airport and the Middle Peninsula Chesapeake Bay Public Access Authority. Additionally, he has been a member of the Pamunkey Regional Library Board of Trustees and the Middle Peninsula Planning District Commission.

A Fond Farewell

During the announcement of his retirement, Mayor Jack Lawson expressed gratitude for Edwards’ contributions, stating, “I appreciate everything you’ve done.” This sentiment reflects the respect and regard held for Edwards within the community and the council.

As West Point prepares for this transition, the council and residents are looking forward to the continued leadership and vision that Hudgins will bring to the town. Edwards leaves behind a legacy of commitment to public service and community development.
