The New York Yankees have made a significant move in the off-season by extending a five-year, $160 million offer to free agent Cody Bellinger, which includes two opt-out clauses. Despite this substantial proposal, Bellinger remains unsigned, and the Yankees have indicated they will not enter a bidding war for his services. According to Yankees insider Bob Klapisch, the team believes their offer is fair, while MLB insider Jim Bowden reports that Bellinger is considering multiple offers from various teams.
As the Yankees await Bellinger’s decision, they have been proactive in evaluating alternative options. Reports from The Athletic‘s Chris Kirschner suggest that the Yankees have “checked in” on outfielder Harrison Bader. Last season proved to be a career year for Bader, who played for the Minnesota Twins and Philadelphia Phillies. He posted a batting line of .277/.347/.449 over 146 games, achieving career highs in both OPS at .796 and home runs with 17.
If Bellinger opts for a different franchise, the Yankees’ current outfield would consist of Aaron Judge in right field, Trent Grisham in center field, and Jasson Domínguez in left field. Domínguez, while promising, is still developing, having played just 502 games across all levels. Last season, he recorded a batting average of .257 with an OPS of .719, but struggled against left-handed pitchers, posting a .204 average against them.
Bader, who has won a Gold Glove for his defensive prowess, could be an asset for the Yankees. His career OPS against left-handed pitching is .760, demonstrating his capability to contribute offensively against southpaws. Although he performed better against right-handed pitchers last season, his superior defense compared to Domínguez makes him an attractive alternative.
Should Bader join the Yankees, he and Domínguez could potentially share time in left field, offering the team flexibility. Notably, Bader is likely to be more affordable than Bellinger, which could provide the Yankees with financial breathing room as they navigate their roster decisions.
As the off-season progresses, the Yankees are poised to enhance their roster either through securing Bellinger or by pivoting to Bader. The outcome will significantly impact their 2024 season strategy and performance.
