St. Bernard Abbey Celebrates Retirement of Abbot Marcus Voss

The monks of St. Bernard Abbey in Cullman, Alabama, will honor Retired Abbot Marcus Voss on February 6, 2026, recognizing his extensive service and leadership within the community. A Mass of Thanksgiving will begin at 16:00 in the Abbey Church, officiated by Most Reverend Steven J. Raica, Bishop of Birmingham. Following the service, attendees will enjoy a festive dinner to celebrate Abbot Voss’s contributions.

Abbot Marcus Voss, the 10th Abbot of St. Bernard Abbey, leaves behind a legacy distinguished by humility, perseverance, and a profound dedication to the Benedictine way of life. Over his six years as abbot and more than 61 years of monastic commitment, he has led the Abbey through a transformative period of growth and renewal. A notable achievement during his tenure was the recent renovation of the monastery building, which reinforced the physical home of the monks while respecting the Abbey’s historic roots.

Beyond architectural improvements, Abbot Voss is primarily remembered for his exceptional ability to foster relationships. He devoted significant efforts to build enduring connections with alumni, benefactors, and friends of St. Bernard. These relationships not only enriched the Abbey but also sustain its ministries today.

The monks of St. Bernard Abbey express their deep gratitude to Abbot Marcus for his unwavering guidance, generous spirit, and lifelong dedication to both God and community. This gathering offers a moment to reflect on his many years of service and to honor a life devoted to the heart of the Church.
