Raphael Saadiq and Miles Caton Perform ‘I Lied to You’ on Kimmel

Raphael Saadiq, actor Miles Caton, and producer Ludwig Göransson delivered a captivating performance of the song “I Lied to You” on Jimmy Kimmel Live. The track is featured in Ryan Coogler’s acclaimed film Sinners, where Caton portrays Samuel “Sammie” Moore, an aspiring blues singer navigating the complexities of life in 1932 Mississippi.

Stripped-Back Performance Highlights Musical Collaboration

During the live performance, the trio opted for a stripped-back production, allowing the emotional weight of the song to take center stage. Accompanied by a group of back-up singers, Caton’s rendition showcased his vocal prowess and the raw essence of the blues genre. Saadiq, who co-wrote “I Lied to You” with Göransson, emphasized the importance of musical authenticity in his approach to songwriting.

“In a modern time where people have a lot of outboard gear and different compressors, it doesn’t matter what you have, it’s really in the fingers,” Saadiq explained. He recounted how the song came to life during a jam session in Göransson’s studio, where he wrote the lyrics on the spot and recorded them that same night.

Acknowledgment at the Golden Globes and Oscars

The song’s critical reception has been significant, as it was announced in December 2023 that “I Lied to You” made the Oscars shortlist for Best Original Song. Another track from the film, “Last Time (I Seen the Sun),” also earned a spot on the prestigious list. At the recent Golden Globes, Sinners won the inaugural Audience Award, a notable achievement for Coogler’s film, which blends themes of vampires, the blues, and Black history.

“Thank you for showing up,” Coogler stated during his acceptance speech, reflecting on the risks taken in creating the film.

With its standout performances and powerful storytelling, Sinners continues to resonate with audiences, marking a significant moment in contemporary cinema. As the awards season progresses, both the film and its music are anticipated to garner further recognition.
