AARP Pennsylvania has announced a significant investment in community development, launching the 2026 AARP Community Challenge grant program. This initiative will allocate over $8 million nationwide to support projects that aim to make towns and cities more livable, particularly for residents aged 50 and older. Applications are open until 17:00 Eastern on March 4, 2026, targeting quick-action projects that enhance public spaces, transportation, housing, digital access, and disaster resilience.
This year marks the tenth anniversary of the Community Challenge, which will see a doubling of its usual funding levels. The program is part of AARP’s broader Livable Communities initiative, focusing on both urban and rural areas adapting to an aging population and a shifting economy. According to Bill Johnston-Walsh, AARP Pennsylvania state director, the grant program enables AARP to collaborate closely with local residents, advocates, and policymakers to enhance quality of life for individuals of all ages while specifically addressing the needs of older Pennsylvanians.
Funding Tracks and Project Support
The grant program consists of three distinct funding tracks. Flagship grants will support projects related to public places, transportation, housing, digital connections, and disaster resilience, with awards ranging from a few hundred dollars to $15,000. Capacity-building microgrants of $2,500 will offer funding alongside expert assistance to improve walkability, home accessibility, and disaster preparedness. Additionally, demonstration grants, typically ranging from $10,000 to $20,000 and potentially reaching $25,000, are intended to replicate successful models, focusing this year on pedestrian safety, broadband access, and housing design.
AARP’s executive vice president and chief advocacy and engagement officer, Nancy LeaMond, emphasized the organization’s commitment to investing in communities over the last decade. She noted that the grants have previously supported a variety of initiatives, from enhancing crosswalks to improving home accessibility, all while fostering broader local engagement.
Community Impact and Eligibility
Since the program’s inception in 2017, AARP has invested $24.3 million in more than 2,100 livability projects nationwide, including 48 in Pennsylvania alone. These projects span all 50 states, Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Eligible applicants for the grant include 501(c)(3), 501(c)(4), and 501(c)(6) nonprofits, as well as government entities. Other organizations may be considered on a case-by-case basis.
All funded projects are required to be completed by December 15, 2026.
