CMAC Launches EmpowHERd Voices to Amplify Women’s Stories

The Community Media Access Collaborative (CMAC) has announced the launch of the second edition of its EmpowHERd Voices program, aimed at empowering women in the Central Valley. Starting on February 21, 2026, this ten-week documentary filmmaking initiative is designed for women aged 18 and over. Participants will learn to create short documentary films that highlight inspirational women from their community.

Ten participants will receive guidance from CMAC staff, engaging in hands-on training that covers all aspects of filmmaking, including pre-production, production, and post-production. Each participant will also receive a $500 stipend upon completing the program, which culminates in a public showcase on April 25, 2026.

Fostering Skills and Connections

EmpowHERd Voices is open to beginners, requiring no prior filmmaking experience or equipment. The program addresses the historical underrepresentation of women in the media, aiming to provide local filmmakers an opportunity to develop their skills, learn from other women in the industry, and build lasting connections.

Angelica Hernandez, CMAC’s Education Specialist and program mentor, emphasized the importance of this initiative. “Women are not always seen in media, especially in key, decision-making production roles, and we wanted to help change that,” she stated. “This is a program built by women for women, rooted in mentorship and hands-on learning. We hope participants leave with confidence in their voice and skills to keep telling their stories long after the program ends.”

Transforming Perspectives Through Storytelling

The program also aims to amplify the representation of women on screen. Alexandra Carrillo, CMAC Teaching Artist and co-program mentor, highlighted the transformative power of documentary filmmaking. “In EmpowHERd Voices, women step behind the camera to tell the stories of inspiring women in their own communities,” she explained. “I’m excited to guide this next group as they develop their skills, grow in confidence, and bring fresh, powerful perspectives to the screen.”

Prospective applicants can attend a question-and-answer session on Zoom on January 17, 2026, at 16:00. Applications will be accepted from January 10 to January 31, 2026. For more information on how to apply, interested individuals can visit www.cmac.tv/empowherd.

This initiative is made possible through funding from The Campbell Foundation and the Central California Women’s Conference, further underscoring the support for women’s voices in media. By providing a platform for creative expression, CMAC is striving to empower women in the Central Valley to share their unique perspectives and narratives.
