URGENT UPDATE: A series of alarming pit bull attacks in Center City, Philadelphia has left multiple dogs injured, prompting police to take a woman into custody. Authorities confirmed that the attacks occurred on December 26, December 29, and December 31, with a growing concern for public safety.
On Monday, December 29, 2023, at approximately 5 p.m., a distressed dog owner, Brian Lovenduski, reported that his 12-year-old miniature pinscher, Ziggy, was violently attacked while on a routine walk near 12th and Chestnut streets. “Suddenly, I felt my dog’s leash pull backwards. A dog had come out from behind us and had his leg before we even realized what had happened,” Lovenduski recounted. His desperate cries for help attracted bystanders who intervened, but the damage was severe.
The attack left Ziggy with a broken jaw, crushed bones in one foot, and one leg requiring amputation. Lovenduski himself sustained injuries while trying to rescue his pet, expressing his shock and concern for the community: “I just am concerned that there’s a potential danger on the street.”
Philadelphia police are investigating the possibility that the same pit bull, whose owner may be homeless, is responsible for at least two other unprovoked attacks. The first occurred on December 26 at 8:30 a.m. involving a 53-year-old man walking his dog at Juniper and Chestnut streets. A similar incident took place on December 31 at 7 a.m., when a 74-year-old man was attacked while walking his dog at 19th and Walnut streets.
Authorities have not disclosed the current location of the pit bull but confirmed that charges are expected against the woman in custody, who is connected to these incidents. ACCT Philly is actively involved in the investigation and is currently searching for the dog. Executive Director Sarah Barnett emphasized the legal complexities of removing a dog deemed dangerous: “Unless the owner wishes to surrender the dog, filing dangerous dog charges is the alternative.”
In the meantime, Ziggy is scheduled for jaw surgery on Wednesday, and Lovenduski remains hopeful. “I’m still in a state of shock. I can’t believe it happened,” he said, grateful for the support he received from bystanders during the harrowing experience.
This alarming series of attacks raises urgent questions about public safety in Center City. Residents are strongly urged to remain vigilant while walking dogs or children in the area. Anyone who spots the brown and white pit bull is encouraged to contact local authorities immediately.
The impact of these attacks underscores the need for swift action and community awareness as police and animal control agencies work to address this pressing issue.
