King Salmon Flood Cleanup Underway as Health Risks Mount

UPDATE: Cleanup efforts are intensifying in King Salmon as residents grapple with the aftermath of unprecedented coastal flooding. Over several days last week, record-high tides and relentless winds inundated homes and businesses, prompting an urgent response from local authorities and organizations.

Residents are now in a race against time to recover from the severe flooding, with less intense high tides expected in the coming days. The Red Cross has mobilized to assist affected families, distributing essential cleanup kits that include gloves, tarps, and tools necessary for restoring flooded residences. “We handed out several of those over the weekend, and my understanding is we’re going to continue to do that today,” said Steve Walsh, spokesperson for the Red Cross on Tuesday.

Health concerns are rising as the Department of Health and Human Services warns residents about potential dangers from floodwaters, which may contain raw sewage. Officials stress the importance of avoiding contact with floodwater to prevent illness. “Mold/mildew can develop in the recovery phase following a flood,” said Mario Kalson, DHHS Division of Environmental Health Director. He advises that residents consider hiring professionals for mold removal and to use fans to improve air circulation.

In a crucial development, the Humboldt County Planning and Building Department has released safety advisories for residents returning to their homes. The guidance includes stringent measures to avoid electrocution and other hazards during cleanup. Homeowners are encouraged to report flood-related damages to the county’s Office of Emergency Services, which is assessing the situation and may seek state or federal assistance.

“If the disaster is severe enough where there is a lot of estimated cost damage, we might be able to get state or federal funding, but in this case with King Salmon, we do meet that threshold,” stated Patric Esh, program manager for Humboldt County’s Office of Emergency Services. Homeowners will primarily rely on private insurance for repairs, but the full extent of the damage remains unclear.

Residents affected by the flooding and enrolled in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) can apply for replacement benefits if food was lost due to the disaster. Applications must be submitted within 10 days through BenefitsCal.com or by calling the Social Services Call Center at 1-877-410-8809.

Amid the chaos, infrastructure damage is also reported. Floodwaters have eroded a section of Navy Base Road, necessitating the delivery of approximately 15 loads of rocks to shore up the compromised shoulder. Surprisingly, Centerville Road remained intact during the high tides, according to local officials.

As cleanup efforts continue, the Red Cross and other organizations remain vigilant, distributing resources and support to those in need. Residents are urged to prioritize their safety and follow official guidelines to mitigate health risks.

The situation remains fluid, and further updates are expected as authorities work to assess and respond to the ongoing impact of this natural disaster. Stay tuned for more developments as King Salmon navigates this challenging recovery.
