New York Yankees Sign Paul DeJong to Minor League Deal

BREAKING: The New York Yankees have just announced a minor league contract with infielder Paul DeJong, including an invitation to spring training. Reports confirm that DeJong, 32, could earn up to $1 million if he secures a spot on the major league roster.

DeJong, a nine-year veteran, initially rose to prominence with the St. Louis Cardinals after being named their everyday shortstop in 2017. His standout season came in 2019 when he was named an All-Star, hitting 30 home runs and posting a 5.2 bWAR. However, he has struggled to replicate that success in recent seasons.

Last season, DeJong’s performance dipped significantly, as he managed only a .228 batting average with six home runs and a .642 OPS over 57 games with the Washington Nationals. He has experience across the infield, starting games at third base, second base, shortstop, and first base.

This signing comes on the heels of the Yankees re-signing veteran utility player Amed Rosario to a one-year, $2.5 million deal. Rosario is expected to share third base duties with left-handed-hitting Ryan McMahon.

The Yankees are entering a critical phase as they prepare for the upcoming season, especially with the news that shortstop Anthony Volpe will be sidelined after undergoing shoulder surgery in October 2023. Other infield options for the Yankees include Jose Caballero and Oswaldo Cabrera, who is recovering from a season-ending knee injury.

As the Yankees gear up for spring training, all eyes will be on DeJong to see if he can recapture his previous form and solidify his place on the team. Stay tuned for updates as this story develops.
