Community Mourns the Passing of John (Jack) Paul Brown at 92

John (Jack) Paul Brown, a beloved figure in the San Pedro community, passed away peacefully on December 20, 2025, at the age of 92, surrounded by family. His life journey began on March 10, 1933, when he was born to Robert and Agnes Brown in Long Beach, California.

A Life Rooted in Community and Family

Jack’s childhood was filled with fond memories of San Pedro, where he spent time catching tadpoles at Averill Park and selling newspapers to sailors arriving at the port. His early work experience included being one of the first employees at Helen Grace Chocolates. During World War II, Jack accompanied his father in his duties as a Civilian Air Warden, demonstrating his commitment to community service from a young age.

He attended Mary Star of the Sea Elementary School and later graduated from St. Anthony’s High School in Long Beach. Before the construction of the Vincent Thomas Bridge, Jack took a ferry across the harbor to reach school. His high school years were marked by a passion for sports, particularly track and field, where he excelled as a distance runner, earning numerous accolades.

After high school, Jack pursued a degree in Drafting and continued his athletic pursuits at the college level. He later joined Northrop Grumman, where he began his professional career. Eventually, he took the bold step of starting his own business, employing friends and colleagues he had met along the way.

Family and Personal Interests

In 1969, Jack met his future wife, Rita Cebula, and they were married on April 17, 1971. Together, they welcomed two children: Dennis in 1972 and Julie in 1975. The couple was actively involved in their church community, with Rita dedicating 25 years to teaching at Holy Trinity School.

Jack cherished family vacations and had a range of personal interests. He enjoyed gardening, sports, DIY projects, and coin collecting. Renowned for his unique sense of humor, he brought joy to those around him. Each day began with a cup of coffee, a crossword puzzle, and a keen interest in the stock market.

Jack is survived by his children, Dennis and Julie, as well as his grandchildren, Natalie and Vincent. He also leaves behind his sister, Agnes Welsh, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Rita, his parents Robert and Agnes, his brother Robert, his sister Phyllis Smith, and nephews Bob and Tom Smith.

A funeral mass will take place on Saturday, January 10, 2026, at 10:00 am at Holy Trinity Church, followed by burial at Green Hills Memorial Park.
