Dr. Gregory McCord Inspires Youth Through New Children’s Book

Dr. Gregory McCord, an educator and author, has launched a children’s book that draws on his own life experiences and aims to inspire young readers. Titled “Augusta Municipal Golf Course ‘The Patch’: A Story Told by a Cabbage Patch Kid,” the book has quickly gained traction, with over 2,000 copies sold within the first two weeks of its release.

Childhood Challenges Shape Perspective

Before even reaching high school, McCord attended 14 schools, a challenging experience that has profoundly influenced his approach to education. He recognizes that this instability not only affected him but also posed difficulties for teachers and peers. Such experiences have informed his understanding of the educational landscape, making him a more empathetic and effective educator.

A Turning Point in Golf

Golf played a pivotal role in McCord’s life, providing him with structure and mentorship at the Augusta Municipal Golf Course, affectionately known as “The Patch.” It was here that he learned essential life lessons, cultivating discipline, confidence, and direction through the guidance of mentors. These formative experiences on the course have become central themes in his writing.

The book, aimed at children aged 6–12 and older teens, is based on McCord’s experiences growing up as a young Black child in Augusta, Georgia. It emphasizes core values such as work ethic, self-belief, and attention to detail, which McCord believes are crucial for personal development.

Positive Reception and Availability

Since its release, the book has received a warm reception. With two versions available—one tailored for younger readers and another for teens—the early feedback has been encouraging. Parents and educators alike have praised the book for its relatable themes and engaging storytelling.

McCord, who initially aspired to attend law school, found his calling in education after a transformative experience as a substitute teacher. A student’s encouragement led him to pursue this path, reinforcing his belief in the power of mentorship. His book reflects this philosophy, aiming to inspire young people to believe in themselves and to pursue their passions.

Through his work, McCord aims to become a beacon of hope and guidance, encouraging the next generation to navigate their challenges with resilience and determination. As he continues to promote his book, McCord remains committed to fostering a supportive environment for young learners, ensuring they understand the importance of believing in their potential.
