Furniture Mission Celebrates 50,000 Items Distributed to Families in Need

In an impressive achievement over six years, Furniture Mission has provided over 50,000 pieces of furniture to families in crisis in the Fargo-Moorhead area. This nonprofit organization has delivered more than $1 million worth of essential items, including beds, chairs, tables, and couches, benefitting nearly 4,000 individuals who are starting anew.

Founded in 2019, Furniture Mission acts as both a “department store” and a “Santa’s workshop,” supporting those facing significant life changes. Clients often come to the organization following natural disasters such as fires or floods, or as survivors of domestic violence, recent prison releases, or job losses. Once referred by local agencies, Furniture Mission assists families in transforming their new spaces into homes.

Meeting Critical Needs

Executive Director Jordan McCormick expressed satisfaction with the organization’s progress, stating, “I think it tells us that we are doing the right thing for the right reason and at the right time.” He emphasized that the milestone of distributing 50,000 pieces of furniture highlights a significant gap in service regarding access to essential furnishings.

Longtime board member Evert Van Engelenhoven noted the emotional impact of the stories shared by clients, acknowledging, “The stories you hear are heartbreaking. We have not walked the walk or talked the talk of people who come in here.”

Volunteers play a critical role in the mission’s success, with many dedicating their time weekly or even daily. Sue Uhlir, who helps families obtain the furniture they need, shared the joy of witnessing the positive effects of their work. Her husband, Dewey Uhlir, contributes through furniture repair, stating, “We never know what the impact we will make, and it could be huge.”

Expanding Resources to Serve More Families

Recently, Furniture Mission expanded its facilities by acquiring an additional 4,000 square feet of space at their location on 2600 Third Ave. N., Fargo. This expansion allows for greater warehouse capacity and more room for clients to select their furnishings comfortably. McCormick noted, “I think it will allow us to do what we do, faster and better. And our goal is to find out how this impacts families.”

The organization relies heavily on volunteer contributions to sort and repair donated furniture. As they continue their life-changing work, they are actively seeking more volunteers to help support their cause.

Half of Furniture Mission’s funding comes from the upcoming Giving Hearts Day, which provides a critical boost to their resources. For those interested in volunteering or providing financial assistance, more information is available on their website at https://www.furnituremissionrrv.org.

Through their ongoing efforts, Furniture Mission remains dedicated to helping individuals and families rebuild their lives, one piece of furniture at a time.
