UPDATE: The highly anticipated Holiday Train Show at the New York Botanical Garden (NYBG) has officially unveiled a breathtaking miniature of the iconic Brooklyn Bridge, captivating visitors with its intricate details and natural materials. The exhibit, now in its 34th year, runs through January 11, 2024, and features over 30 G-scale model trains and nearly 200 plant-based replicas of famous landmarks.
Kenia Pittman, director of exhibition design operations at NYBG, showcased the stunning miniature during a guided tour, highlighting its unique construction from materials like oak, elm, and willow twigs. “The Brooklyn Bridge is the largest bridge in the Holiday Train Show,” Pittman remarked, emphasizing its significance in the collection since 2004.
The real Brooklyn Bridge, a marvel of engineering that spans the East River, opened on May 24, 1884, and has become a symbol of Brooklyn. Its miniature counterpart, however, is crafted with a creative twist, using materials like sugar pinecone scales to mimic its Gothic arches.
The Holiday Train Show transports guests through a miniature cityscape that includes beloved Brooklyn landmarks such as the Lott House and Lefferts Homestead. “They use natural materials gathered from nearby woods, including leaves, seeds, twigs, bark, and acorns to create these unique and beautiful pieces,” Pittman explained.
Visitors can witness the stunning display day or night, with many structures illuminated to create a magical New York City evening scene. The exhibit also features new additions this year, including miniatures of the Whitney Museum of American Art and the recently renovated Delacorte Theater. “Each season, we create new displays inspired by a curated mix of New York City buildings, boroughs, and landmarks,” Pittman said, ensuring a fresh experience for returning guests.
In addition to the train show, NYBG hosts special activities tailored to the festive season. A sensory-friendly morning on January 3 will include cookies and chocolates, while the “Evergreen Express” in the Everett Children’s Adventure Garden runs through January 11, featuring a Story Trail and toy trains.
Tickets for the Holiday Train Show start at $25, available at nybg.org. Visitors looking for a memorable experience can also partake in the Holiday Train Show After Dark event on January 10, which promises an enchanting atmosphere filled with creativity and festive cheer.
