Urgent Cold Snap Hits Brainerd as Temperatures Plunge to 14°F

UPDATE: A sudden cold snap has hit Brainerd, Minnesota, sending temperatures plunging to 14°F as of midday Sunday, December 28, 2025. Just a day prior, residents enjoyed mild conditions, but the weather has dramatically shifted, bringing freezing fog, blowing snow, and wind gusts reaching 28 mph.

The National Weather Service warns that blizzard conditions are developing in western Minnesota, with localized whiteouts possible due to blowing snow. By 5 p.m. Sunday, approximately 3 inches of snow had already accumulated near Brainerd, with forecasts indicating a total of 3-4 inches for the Brainerd and Baxter areas.

As the cold front moves through, wind chills are expected to drop dangerously low, potentially reaching 20 below zero late Sunday into Monday. The latest weather advisory has been issued for Aitkin, Cass, Crow Wing, and Wadena counties as conditions worsen.

“We urge residents to stay indoors if possible, as travel could become hazardous,” the National Weather Service stated in their latest update.

While snowfall totals for central Minnesota have been reduced from an anticipated 7 inches to 3-4 inches, heavier snow is still forecasted for areas south and west of Crow Wing County. Todd County is currently under a blizzard warning, with Morrison and Mille Lacs counties experiencing a winter storm warning.

Looking ahead, the snow is expected to taper off by 3 a.m. Monday, but the frigid temperatures will remain. Residents can expect a high of only about 5°F on Monday, with gusty winds making it feel even colder. After plunging just below zero by midnight, temperatures should rise slightly to around 8°F overnight.

Those planning errands may want to wait until Tuesday when temperatures could reach 30°F, though a 20% chance of snow exists before noon. Wind gusts are expected to pick up again, reaching as high as 25 mph.

As we approach New Year’s Eve, expect more cold weather with a high near 9°F and lows around 6 below zero. New Year’s Day looks to be equally frigid, with sunny skies but a wind chill of about 20 below. This cold snap is likely to keep many indoors, prompting residents to find indoor activities such as reading, watching movies, or enjoying football games.

Prepare for a chilly start to the new year, with high temperatures in the teens anticipated over the weekend. Stay warm and safe as this winter storm unfolds.
