Starlink Phases Out Gen 1 Routers, Offers Free Upgrade to Users

In November 2025, Starlink announced that it will discontinue support for its first-generation (Gen 1) Wi-Fi routers, which were originally bundled with early internet subscriptions. Subscribers currently using these routers received notifications indicating that they will no longer receive software updates. While the routers will continue to function, Starlink has warned that the absence of updates may result in security vulnerabilities and performance issues.

Details of the Upgrade Offer

Starlink is providing users of the Gen 1 router with a free upgrade to a newer model, the Router Mini. Although Gen 1 routers can still operate, they originate from Starlink’s beta testing phase between 2019 and 2020, making them over five years old. These devices were designed for a different network environment, characterized by lower speeds, fewer simultaneous connections, and simpler home networking needs. As Starlink has expanded its satellite constellation and improved service reliability, it has also introduced more advanced router models, including the Gen 2 and Gen 3 routers, as well as the recently launched Router Mini.

Eligible customers will receive an email from Starlink featuring a “Claim Free Router” link. After clicking this link, users will complete a brief survey to confirm their eligibility. Once confirmed, they will be prompted to provide a shipping address for the new Router Mini. Starlink will handle the shipping at no cost to the user.

Installation and Benefits of the Router Mini

Upon receiving the Router Mini, users will find the installation process straightforward. They will first need to unplug their existing Gen 1 router from the power supply and disconnect the Ethernet cable. The new router comes with its own 15W power supply, which is not compatible with the previous model. After connecting the Router Mini to the existing Ethernet cable, users can open the Starlink App and follow on-screen instructions for setup.

One of the most significant enhancements offered by the Router Mini is its support for Wi-Fi 6 technology. This advancement provides improved performance and efficiency, particularly in environments with multiple connected devices. The Router Mini is also designed to be more compact than the Gen 3 router, potentially making it a more appealing option for users looking to optimize their home network setup.

Starlink has emphasized that customers are not required to return the Gen 1 router after installing the new model. As the company continues to evolve its technology, the transition to newer equipment will help ensure that users experience the best possible service.
